They require a Spacecraft Platform and Payload Engineering Manager – SATCOM to participate in a successful transition from a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) to a new operating model and influence and shape of UK government/military satellite operations into the next decade.

This is a full time, temporary role based in Wiltshire. Applicants must be a UK national and be able to achieve ‘Security Check’ (SC) security clearance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of the components of the Space Operations Mobilisation Plan related to satellite operations and engineering, delivering against the plan and reporting progress.
  • Shadow the incumbent satellite platform and payload subsystem engineering teams, including attending and witnessing satellite operations activities, meetings, training, working groups, boards etc.
  • Perform due diligence on assets, personnel, policies and procedures, identifying and discrepancies from the baseline and escalating them accordingly.
  • Confirm the detailed operating model of the incumbent operator, seeking out and resolving any gaps in knowledge or obstacles to a risk-free handover of operations.
  • Review the spacecraft anomaly database to ensure it is sufficiently accurate and populated to de-risk any single-point failures caused by potential knowledge gaps through the loss of on-site satellite engineering personnel.
  • Support and participate in a progressive service assurance process, including preparation for operational readiness demonstrations and key events.

 Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Demonstable experience in satellite operations and management with an emphasis on spacecraft platform and payload subsystem engineering
  • Knowledge of the Airbus E3000 satellite platform and operations
  • University degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent qualification
  • Ability to communicate at all levels of the business both internally and externally with Customers
  • Must be able to achieve SC Clearance

• Lead the systems engineering team to meet the technical objectives set by the management plans and master schedule

Essential Knowledge and Skills required by the Senior Systems Engineer (Satellite Navigation) – SATCOM:

• 5-7 years’ minimum experience working in a systems engineering role within SATCOM / space / defence, ideally on Australian Space programmes
• Must be degree educated in engineering discipline (mechanical, systems, space, computer science, or similar)
• Systems engineering experience using best practice methodologies (V-Model, Agile etc.)
• Experience of Verification & Validation Processes, Integrated Logistics Support, Interface Control Management and Requirements Traceability

Interface with hardware suppliers to:

• At least 10+ years of commercial experience in a Systems Engineering role for satellite platform architecture.
• Knowledge of the systems and project engineering lifecycle from requirements definition through to verification.
• Experience in mission and systems architecture definition, especially understanding of both space and ground segment interaction.
• Good knowledge of a range of subsystems & engineering teams including: GNC (AOCS, ADCS), astrodynamics, C&DH / OBDH, EPS, RCS (propulsion), COM (communications), software, ground segment & operations.
• Experience in the development of systems engineering documentation working with a Project Manager as needed: requirements, CONOPS, review gate materials, test and verification plans / procedures, DDVP, ICDs, equipment lists, FMECA & FTAs
• Awareness of the AIT process: manufacture, assembly, functional and environmental testing.
• Knowledge of commonly used engineering and modelling packages (e.g. ModelSim, Matlab, STK) and/or coding and scripting languages (e.g. Python)
