Key Responsibilities for the Senior System Engineer

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define the overall design, requirements, and specifications for the system, ensuring everything aligns with project goals and user needs.
  • Own the design and development of critical areas like communication protocols, resource allocation, network access, management systems, service availability, regulations, and more. Optimise satellite power usage, resource efficiency, and spectrum management. Integrate various user terminals and define how the entire system will operate.
  • Oversee the development of the Network Operating System by an external contractor. Manage requirements, monitor progress, and ensure proper testing and integration with the system.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineers on the System Design team.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation.
  • Collaborate with the System Integration and Test team to plan how all the different parts of the system will be integrated and tested together.
  • Identify and manage technical risks associated with the system design. Develop mitigation strategies and contingency plans to address any potential issues.
  • Continuously contribute innovative ideas to improve the design and operation of the system.
  • Keep up-to-date documentation and collaborate effectively with external partners, vendors, and stakeholders to ensure the project’s success.

Key Skills and Experience Required by the Senior System Engineer

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, System Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in satellite system architecture and design, with a minimum of 5 years in similar roles.
  • Strong knowledge of satellite communication protocols, orbital mechanics, and space systems.
  • Experience with software-defined satellite communication payloads.
  • Familiarity with regulatory bodies and space industry standards.
  • Highly collaborative team player who can quickly earn the confidence of co-workers and teammates.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with management, engineering teams and partners/suppliers.
  • Experience with business considerations and practical limitations related to system design and implementation.

  • Interact with expert customers on mission data issues.

    • Using and adapting tools for remote sensing data manipulation.
  • Understanding of EO data processing levels.
  • Understanding of instrument calibration principles (e.g. geometric, radiometric, spectral, etc).

• Knowledge of the systems and project engineering lifecycle from requirements definition through to verification.
• Experience in mission and systems architecture definition, especially understanding of both space and ground segment interaction.
• Good knowledge of a range of subsystems & engineering teams including: GNC (AOCS, ADCS), astrodynamics, C&DH / OBDH, EPS, RCS (propulsion), COM (communications), software, ground segment & operations.
• Experience in the development of systems engineering documentation working with a Project Manager as needed: requirements, CONOPS, review gate materials, test and verification plans / procedures, DDVP, ICDs, equipment lists, FMECA & FTAs
• Awareness of the AIT process: manufacture, assembly, functional and environmental testing.
• Knowledge of commonly used engineering and modelling packages (e.g. ModelSim, Matlab, STK) and/or coding and scripting languages (e.g. Python)
